A little bit about me

Hi, I'm Peyton! I am a recent UW graduate with a background in both education and psychology. I am passionate about providing children with excellent, developmentally aligned/supported care. I love nannying because of the intimate connections I am able to forge with both the children as well as the families I work with. There is nothing more special for me than showing up and seeing the smile on a little one's face when they realize we get to spend the day together! Outside of nannying, I have many hobbies including crocheting, birdwatching, and listening to/making music. I am happy to talk further about my background, experience, and what having me as a nanny might look like.

*Actively in the process of getting my first-aid/cpr certifications renewed*

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I have over 5 years of experience working with kids in classroom settings (as teachers and teaching assistants), camp settings (as a camp counselor), and in home settings. I also have extensive volunteering experience with young children (at both daycares and schools), and even have experience working with children who only speak Spanish. I have conversational fluency with Spanish and can help with immersion (but I myself am not fully fluent).

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I am a huge fan of imaginative play, and use my background in theater to make up an abundance of fun stories and scenarios. Imaginative play is a great way to engage kids of a variety of ages, and to stimulate their creativity, curiosity, and it's just plain fun! I also love doing arts and crafts, having kids help and participate with cooking/chores (kids love the chance to show they can do the stuff grown-ups do), and dancing/listening to music. In terms of outdoor activities, I LOVE to introduce children to birdwatching (even the youngest ones find this entertaining!) as it provides a wonderful connection to nature and reminds children of the other non-human inhabitants in our multi-species world. I also love to take kids on outdoor walks (sometimes beach walks), look at plants and animals, and if the weather is nice go to the park. This is just a taste of some of my favorite activities to do with kids though there are many more!

The most important part about being a nanny...

is recognizing that children are full beings with agency and autonomy. They are not inferior to adults or people to talk down to (I mean come on, have you seen how much an infant learns within just one day?!) Each child is their own person with their own unique needs, wants, desires, likes, dislikes, and one of the best parts of being a nanny is getting to know each kid for who they are, and see as their personalities develop and unfold in front of your eyes. To me, effective childcare is about compassion, collaboration, and communication - not control.

My experience with special needs children...

I volunteered with the student disability commission while in undergrad at UW and learned about various disabilities as well as ableism and disability justice. I have more experience with disabled adults than children, but I do have background knowledge in disability studies as well as ways to create inclusive learning/education spaces for a variety of needs/abilities.

The most important part about being a nanny...

It's hard to pick just one! One of my favorite moments was when two girls I had been nannying for a couple months gave me a birthday present of their absolute FAVORITE slime. It was peach scented (peaches are my favorite) and video game themed (which we loved to play video games together) and they were so excited to give it to me. I keep it on my bedside table still for when I'm feeling a little blue to help cheer me up. :)
