More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I started my childcare journey at 15 when I began babysitting for a family friend, caring for their infant during overnight weekends. At 16, I completed a paid 10-week internship through the Boys & Girls Club, where I worked with children ages 4 and up. After completing my internship, I continued with the Boys & Girls Club and at 18 received a permanent position at an off-site program at Lore Elementary. That same year, I began working with the Hamilton YMCA in before and aftercare and summer camp. I’m currently a Senior Counselor, where I lead the age group I’m assigned to for the week, keep the kids engaged, organized, and safe, and help create a fun environment. I’ve also babysat for several children and families I met through the YMCA outside of the program. Through all of these experiences, I’ve worked with different ages and personalities and have learned how to be patient, dependable, attentive, and caring while making sure children feel safe and comfortable.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I love doing arts and crafts, coloring, playing games, dancing, listening to music, reading, and going outside with the kids. I’m always down for a trip to the park, playing with them, or finding something fun to keep them busy. With babies, I like tummy time, reading to them, singing, and sensory activities. I also don’t mind helping with homework or doing little learning activities when needed. Mostly, I just like finding things the kids actually enjoy and joining in with them.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I think the most important part of being a nanny is making sure the child feels safe, comfortable, and cared for. It’s also important to be dependable and communicate well with the parents, because they’re trusting you with someone very important to them. I think being patient and understanding is a big part of it too, because every child is different and has their own personality, routine, and needs.
My experience with special needs children...
I have personal experience with special needs children through my family, including my two brothers who have autism and ADHD. I also have professional experience from working at the YMCA, where I’ve worked with children with ADHD, difficulty with impulse control, nonverbal children, mental health challenges, and behavioral needs. I’ve learned that every child is different and may need a different approach. I try to be patient, understanding, and flexible while making sure the child feels safe, included, and supported. My experience has taught me not to judge a child based on their behavior and to take the time to understand what they may need from me.
The most important part about being a nanny...
One of my favorite experiences has been babysitting children I met through the YMCA. It was nice getting to know them outside of the program and seeing their personalities in a more relaxed setting. I’ve also really enjoyed my time working with younger children at the Y, especially getting to see them grow more comfortable with me and watching their personalities come out. I love the little moments like playing together, helping with something they’re learning, or when a child gets excited to see me. Those experiences are what made me want to continue working with children.
