A little bit about me

I'm a passionate lover of wee ones! My life's work is their care, assisting their development and supporting the well being of their families. I'm firmly grounded, organized and timely, however that never stands in the way of another sing-song silly lullaby, a wiggly dance, a lizard hunt, an impromptu tea party or the 100th retelling of, "Going On A Bear Hunt."
I do my best to live the Montessori philosophy of mutual respect. I practice positive discipline and enjoy observing children flourish as they experience freedom within boundaries. I'm experienced with children of all ages, with an especially soft spot in my heart for birth through toddlerhood.
I have a Masters degree in education with Montessori certification and two related undergrad degrees.
I'm hoping to join new parents and their infant or small baby who are looking for a long term commitment and are warm, funny, communicative, curious and engaged.
I'm very Covid conscious and have been fully vaccinated and boosted.

Lenora
"Rochelle isn’t just a caregiver or nanny. She’s an educator of all ages, a coach for gentle and thoughtful parenting and a baby and toddler whisperer all wrapped up in a Mary Poppins like package. She puts so much thought and care into how she can meet each child at their level and treats them with love as if they are her own. She is the person I still call for parenting advice as she understands my sensitive toddler more than anyone else. Because of her, my two children now have a Nana for life and every person in my family adores her. She’s silly, colorful and fun in all the best ways and she really knows all the things. Anyone that gets the honor to work with her understands that."

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

The month of June, ‘23, I was asked by one of my former families to join them for the month after their second daughter was born.

It was a joyous reunion and the month was packed full of post partum support, practicing Montessori principles, being just as curious as the three year old near sibling, spending curios hours in nature and filling in for any task, whenever, wherever.

We also successfully did no trauma successful potty training!

In April and May ‘23 I had the joy of homeschooling a witty and challenging five year old. We focused mainly on her interests in Mathematics and Literature. Using Montessori techniques and focusing on her interests we made exceptional progress and she was accepted into a prestigious girls school for the next fall.

For the six months before this I’d cared for a 5-11 month old baby girl in Potrero Hill, San Francisco. We began baby led weaning (one of my favorite things !) a bit before six months and every meal was a sensorial adventure!

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I like to begin with bubbles as an icebreaker. It allows me to observe the child, how they interact with each other and the world. ( and it nearly always makes everyone laugh and let their guard down.)

I love outdoor adventures because there are so many opportunities for learning through the senses and large motor skills.

As a Montessori nanny-educator for over three decades I have learned to “follow the child,” meaning providing experiences for them that are based on their interests and abilities. Provide them with the scaffolding they need or ask for in order to master new ideas and skills, however I “never do for a child that which she/he can do for themselves.” (Dr. Maria Montessori)

We might cook together, play the I Spy game , looking for things in our environment that begin with…(the soft, clear sounds of the phonetic alphabet that are the first step of the reading process), we could picnic, go to the library both as an outing and for special events.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I practice the Montessori philosophy of mutual respect for each infant/baby/toddler/child I care for and acknowledge that they are sentient beings from birth. I talk with them about what is happening, what we are doing next, and the time frame of that.

I observe the way they move in the environment and how they convey information to us non verbally through movement. I listen for the intonations they use to indicate what they are wanting to communicate. I use baby sign language with them to help give them agency.

As a result of these and other factors I can then create an environment that allows and encourages them to be active, learn skills and mastery in order to be more and more independent.

Additionally I make myself available for the parents. I answer questions, giving them multiple points of view to assist them in creating a type of unique parenting that is true to the values they hold dearest.

And, they have me to call on 24/7/……..♾️

The most important part about being a nanny...

I can’t say I have a favorite moment I can pull out of all the miraculous and wonderful years I’ve been doing this.

As a physical act of the children I have to say when they come running toward me full tilt upon my arrival and jump/throw themselves into my arms…. That’s always a favorite thing between us!

The one thing that is nearly universal with all “my” kids is how they decide and what they are able to call me, as Rochelle is a big name with sounds that develop as children grow older.

Parents often encourage their children to call me , “Auntie Shelli.” ( Shelli being a diminutive form of Rochelle)

How that ends up being said is always so very dear to me. Anty Sewee, Antee Sweree,
Swewee, Swhewee, ShayShay, (that one is a favorite 🤣), and since one of my littles has a baby sister now, I’ve graduated to Shelli to the 4 year old and since I helped the family settle the first month after baby sister was born, I now add “Nana” to the list.
