A little bit about me

Hello, my name is Ruby and I live in Las Cruces NM. I have been in childcare for over 15 years. 12 of those years I owned my own home daycare and later opened a licenced childcare center. I sold the daycare in IA. in 2024. I have three grown children of my own. Two girls and a boy. One daughter is the mother to my grandson & another on the way. The other is a college student going to school to be a dental hygienist. They live in IA. My son is in the Army training to be an infantry soldier. I love working with children and miss it! I'd love to help a family needing professional, trustworthy and reliable part time (or full time childcare if it is a schedule that works for me). I prefer to care for one child so I can give them the one on one special attention they deserve. I love animals especially dogs! I have 2 dogs, chickens, 4 turtles, fish & I care for my son's 2 cats while he's in the military. I love spending time with my family, crafting, traveling, the ocean & listening to music!

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I owned and operated a home daycare where I cared for eight children by myself and up to 16 with my assistant. I did this for 7 years. Then I transitioned into a full-blown childcare licensed center where we cared for 30 to 40 children and employed 18 women. I got my start when I first moved to Iowa from California and worked at a daycare center for 3 and 1/2 years and since then childcare has been a huge part of my life for many years. I moved to Las Cruces New Mexico in 2022. I am also a mom of three adult children. I have experience working in all age groups ages 0-16

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

Reading, coloring, painting, Play-Doh, water play tables, sensory boxes, listening to music, blocks, small motor skills (learning to use scissors, small stacking items, using counting & sorting items) and large motor skills (like exercise, dancing & large block building), going on walks, crafts of all sorts (I'm NOT afraid to get dirty!) Of course these will be based on the age of the child. I prefer not to drive anywhere with the child because of how bad the traffic & drivers can be here, but I'm more than happy to go on walks with a stroller.

The most important part about being a nanny...

Being able to be a stable mentor & care giver for a child is important. Being a nanny for a child in their home spares them from the constant changes of a daycare. Children need stability. A child being fortunate enough to be in their own home for care is a blessing. That's where they feel most comfortable. Providing loving caring supervision so parents can feel safe and comfortable while at work is very important! Even though I was in the daycare industry for over 15 years, I still believe being in a home setting is the safest choice. Being in a daycare center is good for child development as far as socializing the child. However, being at the mercy of employees that you don't really know who have your children for long hours, all week can be very nerve-wracking, especially as a new parent or a first-time parent. I have been in both situations. Both being a parent of three and working in the daycare industry have taught me a lot. I see both the pros and cons of both situations.

My experience with special needs children...

I have experience working with special needs children because of my daycare background. However, at this time I have decided not to work with special needs children.

The most important part about being a nanny...

When a child runs up to me to tell me they love me, or don't want to go home because they are having so much fun with me! I still keep in touch with a few of the kids that I had in my daycare since they were babies. They are now in high school. When they see me in Iowa when I'm visiting my kids they always give me a hug and tell me how much they miss me and my daycare. That warms my heart. It lets me know that I made a difference in their life!
