More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I am a Behavioral therapist working with children with autism, teaching them skills to help them better achieve their goals. This is not technically a nanny position, however the job targets all of the same responsibilities. As a children’s therapist I carry out these responsibilities while using them as teaching opportunities for skill deficits a child may have and taking data on their progress in learning! I do this using behavioral therapeutic interventions & targeted skill acquisition tactics. This could mean we target anything from life skills (potty training, food prep, etc) to cognitive skills (school work, reading, counting, labeling, etc) to social skills (playing with peers, communication, etc). I work with multiple children a day for extended periods of time & commit to those children up until their discharge from our clinic! I was also an emergency medical technician prior to my current position & often treated & worked with children of all ages, at that time!
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
Arts and crafts, motor activities (swimming, bikes, walks), leisure activities (reading, movies, toys/games), baking, & just about anything the kiddo can imagine!
The most important part about being a nanny...
Making sure that the children feel heard & have choices. The children may not have the ability to get every thing that they may want in the moment that they want it, but it’s extremely important to me that when that does occur they feel heard and understood & that they are presented with alternate reinforcing options as well as the tools that they need to communicate what they want and feel about the situation. No bond can ever be truly built until you’ve established a solid foundation for communication.
My experience with special needs children...
Therapist for children with autism & related disabilities.
The most important part about being a nanny...
My favorite moment working with children never fails to be when they finally get that skill they’ve been practicing at & watching the excitement and giggles that explode out of them every time! Even something as small as watching a child successfully whistle for the first time after practicing for days, the way their face lights up & the lasting impact that comes with teaching a child a new skill is absoloutley unbeatable!
