I volunteered in a daycare for children ages 0-4. I have worked in educational settings with children ages 4-12. Most of my care experience was at a residential summer camp for individuals aged 7-25 with disabilities. I know how to tailor routines, discipline, and play to meet the unique needs of a child.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I love to have dance parties and song circles with kids! I'm also a fan of imaginary play with toys, costumes, and storytelling. I can climb and play tag forever and have a lot of camp games to draw from. I also just like walking and chatting about what happened at school or what you'd do if you were president of the moon. I like to include kids in whatever I'm doing and make a game of it, even if it's laundry or homework.
The most important part about being a nanny...
Doing right by someone who has put their trust in you. At the end of the day, it's about making sure the child is healthy and feels loved and secure.
My experience with special needs children...
I have cared for individuals aged 7-30 with developmental disabilities. I am comfortable with autism, non-verbal children or those who use alternative communication systems, executive function problems, behavior issues/aggression, trauma, toileting issues, food allergies, seizures, dysphagia, and mobility issues.
I know that people with special needs are full human beings and have strengths as well as limitations. I see it as a goal to shine light on those strengths and encourage all children to reach their fullest potential.
