Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
Growing up and while in high school my mom had a daycare which I helped her run and as I got out of high school I baby sat and nannied for 2-3 families at a time. I worked at a day care for 2 years where I would watch about 5-10 kids at a time ranging from 4 months to 13 years old. My last job was 3 years long (had to quit due to relocation) where I was a school helper and caregiver for a child with a TBI who had very limited mobility and communication skills. I helped with online school since he was unable to do school work on his own. I assisted with speech, physical and occupational therapy.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
Going on walks, arts and crafts, reading, singing, playing, building blocks and puzzles.
The most important part about being a nanny...
Is making sure the time counts and nurturing. As a nanny we are there when parents aren’t so it’s important to build a safe and trusting relationship with both parents and children.
My experience with special needs children...
I was a care taker for my cousin who is special needs for 3 years. He is immobile and is fed through a feeding tube. I was his school helper and would assist with his online school and well as be the first point of contact for all school related programs. I would accompany and assist him with physical, speech and occupational therapies. I would administer medication and assist his nurse as well as play games involving movement, helping teach him daily skills like reading, writing and mumbling words. I developed multiple forms of ways that we could communicate easily and made sure he had a comfortable and happy daily life!
