I've worked at an after school program & summer camp with the YWCA. I was an assistant teacher at a day care called Apple Day Care and as a babysitter/nanny all in NJ where I'm from. Growing up as a teenager and young adult I also provided babysitting and childcare for family members and local gatherings at the YWCA.

• I love to engage with children in playtime with their lead and to also show them games I enjoyed playing as a child.
• Going to the park to enjoy active and outdoor play.

One day after school the 6 year old boy I cared for explained to me that one of his classmates had been teasing him. I knew this classmate to be a good friend of his and I asked him was he sure that she was teasing him. He responded , "Yes I'm sure because of HOW she said it." I ask him what she said to him and his response was.. "She said... "Thats why your babysitter is Black". This little girl is what one would identify as "Black" herself so this confused me, yet I understood the depth of this situation. The child I cared for is what one would identify as a "White" child. I took a brief pause to collect my thoughts as to not say or show anything that could influence the perspective of the child in my care negatively. I then asked him, "How does what she said make you feel?" His response..."Upset & confused because you're not Black, you're Brown!"
