More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I have prior experience assisting in the day care my mom worked at, working part time over summers. This gave me a lot of hands on experience caring for infants and kids up to age 10. Additionally, I used to frequently nanny for two children ages 4 and 8 for approximately two years, with various other babysitting jobs in the interim.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

One of my favorite activities to do with children is creative play. I am all for encouraging children to use their imagination and express themselves through drawing, colors, and other fun creations through arts and crafts, or just playing pretend! Reading is another activity I frequently enjoy with kids, whether that's reading to the child, working on sounding out new words, or helping them learn their letters and numbers. For outdoor activities, (after putting on our sunscreen) I typically will let the child lead with my guidance. That could mean if the child loves playing with a ball, I would come up with a fun ball game we could play together. If they seem interested by nature, we could search for and learn facts about the different plants and bugs we see.

The most important part about being a nanny...

What matters to me most is the safety and wellbeing of the children. Above all else, that comes first, and influences each decision I make.

My experience with special needs children...

As a type 1 diabetic myself, I have an extremely strong understanding of the condition and the needs that a diabetic child would have. I keep glucose tablets on me at all times. I am familiar with target blood sugar ranges, symptoms of highs and lows, using glucagon if needed, testing blood sugars with a fingerstick/meter, administering insulin with a vial/syringe, as well as using medical devices such as CGMs and both the Medtronic and Tandem insulin pumps. I have some experience in childcare for children with autism. My godson, age 6, is on the spectrum. I had the bulk of my experience during my time at a daycare where there was a nonverbal toddler on the spectrum I spent a lot of time caring for. I have a very strong understanding about ASD and potential triggers and hardships for young ones living with autism, such as loud sounds, textures, rigidity, limited communication, and focusing on special interests. I am also comfortable working with children with Down Syndrome.

The most important part about being a nanny...

My favorite thing to see is the way children interpret the world around them through their own funny "kid speak." The little girl I used to nanny for, age 4, was looking at the pages while I read her a book. She saw a question mark on the page and proudly exclaimed, "Look! It's a mystery mark!" When I asked her why she thought it was called that, she said "well I always see it on books when there's a mystery!" Too cute!
