Painting, coloring, baking, going for walks, pretending, making forts, reading, going to the park, the library, the pool, the museum, the zoo, finger painting, playing with shaving cream, bubbles, chalk art, swinging, monkey bars, singing, dancing, balancing things on our heads, spinning things, pulling things in wagons, dumping things out of wagons, laughing, laying in the grass and pointing out all the amazing things around us, waving at choo-choos, petting doggies, kitties, caterpillars, and anything safe, making spit bubbles, belly-drumming, running, jumping, helping them work through the hard moments, helping them fall asleep.
The most important part about being a nanny...
The opportunity to change lives, and to have my life changed. Being entrusted with the most precious part of someone's heart. That's huge. I will never take that lightly. It's always an opportunity to learn new things, no matter how long I have been doing this. Every child and every family is different.
My experience with special needs children...
In high school, my gym teacher chose me to work with a 1st grader who had a degenerative disease that caused dwarfism, blindness, and eventually, she needed to be in a wheelchair. He had me teach swimming to her for a couple years. It was fantastic! When I graduated from high school, I wrote her a poem in Braille. The school had a Braille typewriter. Katie passed away in her early adulthood, but that teacher and I still reminisce about those days.
I do have experience working with some special needs children in daycare as well. And I worked at an adult daycare for developmentally challenged adults.

The most important part about being a nanny...
The 3-yr-old I was caring for kept using the word, "hate," and his parents were trying to get him to use different words. His mom would tell him that it's a very strong word, and give him alternatives. So, taking her lead, when he used, "hate," while riding in my car, I said, "D, hate is a really strong word--"
"--I know, I know!" he said without missing a beat. "And I get stronger and stronger every time I say it!"
