Activities I enjoy doing with children...
My favorite part about working with children is getting to revert myself into a child and allow myself to engage fully in the things I too loved as a kid. A few of these things include drawing/painting, reading/writing, crafting dancing, singing, being outdoors, playing pretend, and lots of games. I’ve always been very imaginative and I love to just sit and think or scrapbook my thoughts.
My experience with special needs children...
In high school for about two years, I volunteered with my brother at our local Art League every Tuesday evening to help teach an arts and crafts class to adults with Down syndrome and Autism. A lot of them were high-functioning, some were non-verbal, others very sporadic and enthusiastic. I was able to form a bond with almost all of them and call them my friends; working with them was very special since I am a lover of art and community, and I learned so much about patience and giving up some control, while still being firm and grounded in myself.
Also in high school, I was involved in a program called PALs, a peer assistance and leadership class that allowed me to work with kids and teens with autism, disabilities, and behavioral issues. In this class, we were each assigned a student to chat and play with, and be a mentor to. We would go to different schools, help with gardening, perform skits for them, have contests, and much more! This program inspired me to continue mentoring.
