A little bit about me

Hi! My name is WD (they/them). I love working with children of all ages, but I have a soft spot for the early years. A former caregiver to disabled adults and a future occupational therapy student, I'm especially interested in working with children with developmental disabilities.

I work well with families who are growth-oriented and direct in their communication. My approach to childcare is warm and attachment-based; I view the caregiver’s receptivity and ability to set and hold boundaries as the foundations of a strong child-caregiver relationship. I’m a strong organizer and planner and an excellent vegetarian cook; I love cooking with/for kids and am happy to take on household management duties for appropriate compensation. I believe that children need routines, and I enjoy planning activities with “the whole child” in mind, creating opportunities to explore across social, emotional, cognitive, sensory, fine- and gross-motor, and linguistic domains of development..

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I’ve worked with kids for the last decade, taking on positions as a nanny, babysitter, Montessori assistant toddler teacher (over a year of experience), substitute teacher (including a long-term position as a Diverse Learner Teacher for kids K-5), dance teacher, after-school STEM enrichment teacher, camp counselor, tutor, and lice treatment professional. I have also completed several college courses in pedagogy and early childhood development.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

-singing songs when we wash our hands or during difficult transitions
-spending time outside in all weather
-all kinds of movement-based play, from mimicking to yoga poses to rolling down the hill
-providing lots of options for art materials with no objective other than to explore
-reading out loud
-sneaking in deep breaths with bubbles and pretend candles
-looking at birds, squirrels, pinecones, flowers, leaves, and seasons together
-cooking, baking, and everyday cleaning tasks
-caring for plants
-allowing children to lead in a safe environment (e.g., quietly following a 30-month-old as we explore the library)

My experience with special needs children...

I've worked with kids aged 2-12 with many different disabilities. From March to June of 2025, I stepped in as a long-term substitute Diverse Learner Teacher for 18 K-5 students with IEPs. I built curricula to meet each student's access needs and support their educational goals from scratch, on the fly. During college, I also worked as a summer nanny for a child with sensory processing disorder who exhibited challenging behavior. My other 4.5 years of experience in many forms of group childcare have required me to learn extensively about several disabilities to meet children's needs.
