"I highly recommend Isa as a nanny and caregiver. She has helped our family with our three daughters for the past three years and has truly become part of our family. Isa first started as an occasional babysitter for date nights and later took on a regular role picking our girls up from school every weekday. She would arrive around 1:30 PM, prepare healthy snacks, and be at school early to pick them up at 1:55 PM. She stayed with them until about 5:00–5:30 PM each day. Isa is very engaged with the kids. Instead of turning on the TV, she spends time helping with homework, playing games, riding bikes, or taking them to the park or playground. Plus l, she is great at hairstyles if you have a daughter. During the summer she planned fun activities like trips to the park, pool, and Great America, and even created organized weekly schedules. She is very organized and willing to adjust if needed. Isa is loving, dependable, and respectful. Any family would be lucky to have her."

"Lauren watched our newborn when I went back to work. My husband and I both worked hybrid (home some days, office some days) and Lauren was flexible with our needs and requests whether we were in the home or away. She watched him for the majority of his first year and was perfect for that age. She left us when she was halfway through her pregnancy with her first child. She gave us adequate notice and assisted in finding a replacement. She was trustworthy, loving, and gentle. We loved having her care for our little guy."

How to Hire an After-School Nanny in the United States

Nanny Lane helps you find an after-school nanny in the United States who can look after your children once the school day ends.

We offer nanny services including background checks, Agency, and nanny payroll. Start by posting a profile with a job description, and soon you can start connecting with nannies who fit your family.

What Is an After-School Nanny?

An after-school nanny cares for school-age children on weekday afternoons, usually from school pickup until a parent gets home. It is a part-time role with a regular schedule, which suits nannies who want a consistent shorter day.

Common Responsibilities of After-School Nannies in the United States

After-school nannies pick up children from school or the bus stop, give them a snack, and help with homework. They also take children to activities and lessons, supervise play, and may prepare dinner or tidy up after the children before a parent arrives.

What to Consider Before You Hire

Share your school's dismissal time, the days you need care, and how you will handle early dismissals, holidays, and school breaks. Confirm whether you need the nanny to drive, and whether they would be comfortable transporting several children. A regular schedule makes it easier to find a good fit.

After-School Nanny Interview Questions

Once you find a promising candidate, invite them for an interview to see if they would be a great fit for your family. Here are some questions you can ask:

  • Are you available at our school's dismissal time every weekday?
  • Do you have a car, and are you comfortable driving children to activities?
  • How would you handle homework and screen time?
  • What would you do if a child was sick or hurt?
  • Do you have experience with school-age children?

At this stage, request their references and ask their references some questions. After preparing the job offer or contract, we recommend that you run a background check before the start date.
