As the youngest of a very distant family until 17, I often felt something was missing, and it was feeling like my own person. I was- and still am- only treated as an extension of my mother. I always loved being around children, but my passion for childcare sparked after babysitting my cousin’s 2-year-old last week. Her parents called her bad and “a handful”; they apologized for needing me to watch her.
I spent 9 hours with her and she was nothing but a delight. She’s not a handful- she’s an autistic toddler. Her parents don’t know how to handle that, nor do they care to learn how.
Even with no experience, caring for her was a joyous blessing in disguise.
