More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I used to work in foster care for a little over a year. I did supervised visitations, so I would transport foster kids from one location to another so that they could have visits with their parents until they could be reunified. A couple years ago, I was a para in an elementary school. I worked with kindergarteners, helping out with classroom management and occasionally helping them with their reading skills. After that, I started working as a preschool teacher at Educare of Lincoln. Currently, I work as a special education para at another elementary school in Lincoln. After the school year ends, I will be moving to Omaha and I will be able to work full time over the summer with potential part time hours during the school year.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I love having random conversations with children. Children come up with the craziest things and I love playing into their most wildest imaginations. I also love coloring (or doing other crafts), having dance parties, and playing make-believe.
The most important part about being a nanny...
Obviously the most important thing is to make sure the children feel safe while they’re with you. But I also believe that being likable is a huge part of it as well. If the children are comfortable with you, then they are more likely to have a fun time and want to hang out with you again.
My experience with special needs children...
I’m currently a special education para educator in an elementary school. I work in the Life Skills program, so I’m spending all of my time with children who have disabilities. I work with a lot of children who have autism, most of them being nonverbal. There’s also a couple kids I work with who are in wheelchairs.
The most important part about being a nanny...
While I was working at the family service company a few months ago, I worked with this 3 year old boy a lot. The visits with his mom usually took place at the YMCA. The only time I spent alone with him was in the car to and from the visit. Every day, he would ask where we were going and I told him the YMCA, right before playing the YMCA song. I would play it and we would sing and dance along to it the whole ride there. When the song was over, he would always say “Miss Emily, you’re my best friend”. It was times like these that made me realize that I wanted to work with kids and that’s what I’m passionate about.
