A little bit about me

I’m a young adult looking for small jobs while I figure out my life, the first thought was childcare. I partially raised my younger brother and have been a babysitter for many family members. I have a creative mind and like to come up with fun ideas for the kiddos. For those with ‘Special Needs’, I have been around quite a few. I am quite understanding and helpful with sensory and processing skills. I do well with handling emotional and mental needs in general as we all know kids are a lot of both. I like to have fun and see the kids live a good little childhood. Throw some activities and laughter in, they’ll get a good nights sleep. I do well in the kitchen, cooking up meals and making fun little snacks. I also like to keep things clean, and also can teach them a thing or two about ‘Tidy Up Time’.

Seeing the kids have a fun time with all the smiles and seeing the parents relieved and at ease. Being able to help a family is heart warming and makes me smile.

My experience with special needs children...

I have a cousin I babysat daily from 3 months up until she was 4, She is Autistic and nonverbal. However with time I understood her perfectly and was able to understand her needs and feelings with verbal communication. There were many cases I had to sit and do a few exercises with her, even if it took a while for her to understand. I was stern yet very gentle. Being stern helped grab her attention. Being gentle helped her calm and focus. I also was a bit of a helper when I was in school. During lunch and afterschool hours was the time I spent in the needs room to help the lead teacher.

The most important part about being a nanny...

As mentioned, I have a game called ‘Tidy Time’. It’s where I have the kids help clean up previous messes yet I make it enjoyable. We sing and dance, I like to settle down with a calm, creative little snack after. Usually let them help me make the said snacks. Teach them fun little ways to make a snack creative. It is what I did with my brother for the longest and I will say for a while he was quite clean. (Until he turned 13 but most of us know how that is.)
