Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I love walking to the park, taking kids to the Children's museum, the Nature and Science museum, the Zoo, the library, anywhere the parents are comfortable with! I also love being creative with the kids, if there isn't a pool and it's warm out why not fill up some bowls with water and take that outside with some toys, sponges and soap! I love making things, for kids ages 5-8 it's fun seeing what they have in mind with some tape, scissors, felt and pipe cleaners! I also enjoy the quieter moments as well, like just reading to them whether it's before nap time or just because it's what they want to do in the moment. There are several things that I enjoy and many highlights of working with kids.
The most important part about being a nanny...
The most important part about being a nanny is prioritizing safety and developing a trustworthy and honest dynamic with the parents from the start. Mutual trust between parents and nanny is a must from the get-go and I believe with that comes honesty in all forms and mutual respect. Communication is also an important factor for developing a nanny/family dynamic whether it's about the kids, scheduling, etc. I believe in constant communication for these relationships to work, especially for a long-term situation!
My experience with special needs children...
I have limited experience working with special needs children however I grew up with two different families that each had one child with Down syndrome, they were close family-friends of ours. Because our families were life-long friends we would travel or just spend weekends together and I would watch one of these children on certain occasions when the parents were out of the house. We would color together, listen to LOTS of music (which I loved), and because of all of the time we had together I have learned so much. I have so much love and adoration for those with Down syndrome and believe that they teach us more than we teach them. There were times where I prepped food for this child, helped them use the restroom, cleaned up after messes, sat with them through behavioral events. I believe this experience helped me acquire a lot of patience as patience is required for caring for those with special needs.
The most important part about being a nanny...
There are too many funny, memorable moments I have had with all of my kids, however one that comes to mind is the child in my most recent nanny share, who is 2, who is OBSESSED with The Muppets. Never met a child who has ever loved the muppets the way she does, let alone knew who they were, but she is now an expert on the subject at 2.5 years old. I asked her who her favorite Disney princess is (I know she also loves Moana) and she looked right at me, holding her beloved stuffy frog and sad "Uhm Kermit!" I laughed so hard because although obsessed with the Muppets, I never would have thought that would be her answer.
