The most important part about being a nanny...
I will preach until my last breath that the most important thing about caring for children is ADAPTING to that child. Every child learns and thrives in different ways and you cannot expect them to change to your teaching style! I have seen this mistake in too many teachers, and it causes so much difficulty in not only the bond you create with the child, but the child's self esteem, willingness to learn, and even in how safe they feel around that adult! No child is the same as the last, and it doesn't take much effort to learn how that baby needs you to love and care for them!
My experience with special needs children...
I have worked as a teacher in a school for children with special needs. I mostly taught ages 3-4 in my classroom, but I also worked with a few children aged 3 months to 2 years
The most important part about being a nanny...
Its hard to choose a "favorite moment" since every moment seemed to become my new favorite. But there is one story that made me know I made an impact on my kiddos lives. I walked into work one morning, and across the lunch room I heard screaming as 3 teachers tried to calm one of my students with Autism while he kicked and screamed on the floor. I look over at him and simply say "Hey! What are you doing?" Then... instead of screaming I see this baby jump up off the floor with a huge smile on his face screaming "MISS KAY! GOOD MORNING MISS KAY!" He grabbed his backpack and marched right over to me after saying sorry to the other teachers, gave me a big hug, then marched straight to class to start the day. We later talked about what happened and he had been overstimulated and the big feelings weren't being seen or addressed by the other teachers, but he told me that he was safe with me because I listened. Had me in tears.
