sensory play, arts and crafts, baking, gardening, dance parties, collaborative storytelling, reading books, singing songs, building/creating with household materials, and as much outdoor play time as possible! I'm always looking for new ways to give my kids active roles in their own education.
The most important part about being a nanny...
Making sure that, no matter how crazy and mixed up our adult lives are, it never affects the kids in my care. It is so important for me that every child I care for feels loved, seen, understood, and respected, no matter what.
My experience with special needs children...
As an early educator, part of my job was semi-annual developmental assessments of each student in my class. Multiple times this involved flagging specific behaviors that led to the child entering the state's Early Intervention program and getting life-changing occupational therapy. I also worked with EI specialists to best help several students in my class on a range of disorders including hearing, eating, speech, seizure, anxiety, and autism, as well as more broad developmental delays.
As a nanny, I've also cared for multiple school-aged kids with ADHD and/or autism, and I've been able to help them come up with coping mechanisms, alternative schedules, and lifestyle choices that improved the entire family's quality of life!

The most important part about being a nanny...
For Christmas last year, I hunted down a copy of an old, out-of-print book of children's poems that had been a bedtime favorite for my mom and me, and gifted it to my nanny child, G, who was just shy of a year old at the time. He loves the book, and we read from it at least once each week. His dad took a picture of me reading the book to him, and (with permission) I had the photo framed and gave it to my own mom for mother's day. Definitely a special moment to share and pass down!
