A little bit about me

I am a 52-year-old mother of 2 children; my 19-year-old daughter is a third year college student and my 11-year-old son is in 6th grade.

I have worked with children since I was 19. I first worked with children as a Religious Institution teacher while in the 4th year of my Bachelor’s degree course, then as a tutor, care provider and nanny after 18 years in the corporate world.

In June 2021, I started working as a nanny for families in New York city with children’s ages ranging from 7 months to 11 years of age, and in Rhode Island since June 2023. As a mother and a trained teacher, I know how children develop and therefore know how to fully engage them with age appropriate play and activities and also help them with school work, when needed. I love being around children, I marvel at how they develop, engage and play, and endeavor to be a positive and significant part of their every day lives.

I am currently a nanny to a 2 sisters aged 2 and 9 months.

Sarah
"Nia watched our baby from 4-months to 13-months old. From the very beginning, I felt comfortable entrusting Nia with our baby. She is loving, fun, skilled, and safety-oriented. She is always on time (and more often than not 5-10 min early!), and very communicative. She played with and fed our baby in the home, and also took her on walks and outings to the playground and library, helping her socialize with other little ones. She is flexible and responsive to feedback, and I also appreciated that she was open to babysitting in the evenings and weekends, and also watch our older daughter on occasion. The only reason we are ending with Nia is because we are going away for the summer and enrolling our baby in daycare in the fall. Otherwise we'd love to continue with Nia!"

"Nia made an immediate connection with our 6-month old and we could see his face light up every morning when she walked through the door. She is exceptionally caring and intelligent, reading many books and encouraging playtime. We feel so lucky to have had her care for our son and she took the time to learn all of his needs quickly. The only reason she is not still with our family is that we moved away, but we keep in touch and continue to share photos and videos as our boy grows!"

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I am a teacher with a Master’s degree in Education and looking to pursue an online PhD program in Educational Psychology. While I do that I prefer to work with a child(ren) as a nanny and tutor, where needed, on a one to one basis. My play and activities are based on the child(ren)’s likes and interests as well as my knowledge of how the brain develops. I intend to join academia and research work after the successful completion of my PhD program. I also have over 10 years of executive management experience which positively factors into my everyday life and my role as a nanny and tutor.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I play most sport, so I engage the children in whatever sport they engage in or are interested in. I like being outdoors in general and walking. Indoors, I engage children in age appropriate play and activities. Being a teacher, the games and activities I come up with, are educational. I usually create games and activities based on the child’s interests.

The most important part about being a nanny...

Respecting the will of the parent(s) and following their instructions, creating play and other developmental activities based on the likes and interest of the child(ren) and providing an environment where children feel mentally, emotionally and physically safe and comfortable.

My experience with special needs children...

Both my children are on the Autism spectrum, they are both high functioning. So I have personal experience with children that have special needs. I worked for an association that housed children and young adults in the UK for 2 years, my experience of working with special needs children, comes from that job.

The most important part about being a nanny...

When a 3 year old I was nanny to, started addressing me the way I addressed her when I picked her up from school. I addressed her as Miss L….. and she in turn started addressing as Miss Nia. I develop very close bonds with the children I look after so I have a lot of favorite nanny moments.
