A little bit about me

I am creative, playful, and goofy, and I also know how to give clear boundaries. I understand young children and their learning in a way that few adults do. I might get older kids better than you, too, but I don’t know if I’ve earned that badge yet. I’d want to ask a few of them what they think.

I have an MA in early childhood special education and am currently taking a break from teaching preschool. As a grown-up, I’m a passionate, goofy oddball who overthinks most things. I believe in teaching children to think for themselves, stand up for what is right, and truly listen to and care for others, especially across differences... all in a developmentally appropriate way (this is where the overthinking comes in handy!).

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I’ve been teaching preschool classes for the past ten years, the past four of which were through the school district and included serving as a special education teacher and case manager. I have occasionally helped out in or subbed in classes for toddlers and two-year olds. Prior to working in preschool, I worked in after school programming and summer camp for school-aged children.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

Young children are constantly learning, and I love watching them and deciphering what they're working on (it may not be what you think it is!). My favorite thing to do is just join them where they're at, helping them take it just a little bit further, and thinking of other activities that also connect to the ideas they're exploring. A concrete example of that last one: one child was really into scattering collections of small objects, which could be fairly disruptive at times. Thinking about this led me to discover the AMAZING game where kids carried an entire big tub of playground balls up the climber and dumped them down the slide. He also really liked making confetti 😉.

Things I would consider my strong points: engaging read-alouds, exploring outside, singing (often songs I've made up myself), dancing, talking, building, sensory play, playground play, wordplay that builds phonemic awareness, playing with patterns... I'll leave it at that for now!

My experience with special needs children...

I’ve worked with children with a variety of strengths and needs and have an MA in early childhood special education. I am very good at creating visuals and/or interventions to help kids navigate experiences that they need extra help with. I have been told that I am particularly patient, but, honestly, I’m not—I just understand where individual children are developmentally and don’t blame them when who they are clashes with adult and/or neurotypical systems and expectations.

I have the least experience with children who have significant medical needs, but I’ve done a bit and can learn more.
