More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
My earliest experience being around 11, my neighbors across the street had a babygirl around 6 years younger than me. Though I was young as well we grew a sibling like attachment to each other and I watched and entertained her often. My niece was then born when I was 13. My brother is ten years older than me. I was young when I became an Auntie. This was a different experience entirely as I became familiar with learning what sets her off and what comforts her. Most of all I learned what makes her laugh, what cry means she's hungry and what cry meant she needed a hug. Babies and children communicate just as much as us but differently and I learned this at a young age. I fell in love with being a source of joy and comfort for my baby niece and to this day find immense fulfillment in watching her grow, she's now 7 and I'm 21. In between that time I find myself naturally drawn to being a space of compassion and understanding for many of the children I've had the pleasure of meeting.

The most important part about being a nanny...
Being a path through which they can grow and blossom with the support and love that every child is deserving of. Not only being a source of learning for them, but letting them teach us lessons that we may have not gotten growing up that children do a wonderful job of reminding us of. Lessons such as joy, laughter, curiosity, our humanity. The responsibilities of adulthood can callous us with age, but I believe children are wonderful sources of the simple yet beautiful parts of life. To learn from each other as a caregiver and a child is a beautiful experience. For parental figures to come home to their children knowing they've been taken care of and poured into is the most important part of being a nanny.
My experience with special needs children...
My best friend of 7 years has a special needs brother who just recently turned 6. Being around and watching a child with special needs teaches you an entirely different kind of humanity and gratitude for life as it takes you out of the "typical" way of communicating or connecting with another human being. Though he has trouble speaking and processing the world the way I do, he showed me his likes, dislikes, favorite foods, shows, and ways of connecting that don't have to be what we might be used to. He is a lover of Bluey and his alphabet youtube videos on his iPad. He is a beautiful example of how similar we all are no matter how different we may seem on the surface.
The most important part about being a nanny...
My family was taking care of my niece one summer she came to visit for a couple of months. She was a toddler and would throw tantrums by peeing on the carpet when she was upset. My mom (her grandmother) was particularly overwhelmed so I took her upstairs to clean her up and talked to her about why and how we can improve her behavior. When she was met with a compassionate and open space to express herself she opened up to me in a way that is more intelligent than most people believe children to be. After this I explained to her better ways to guide her emotions and we hugged and had a beautiful bonding moment. She never peed again after this and we created a beautiful memory. This showed me that even when children are difficult, as caregivers we have the opportunity to be a pathway to guide them through their big emotions and provide a structure of understanding and compassion that will lead to them being productive and emotionally healthy adults in the future.
