What matters to me the most besides safety is for the child to be able to be comfortable and express themselves. I believe being in an environment where you are not able to express or have the confidence to even ask a question can be counterproductive for the child's growth especially when some children have so many questions!

My favorite moment was when I had to take care of two 7-8 year old brothers who were angry at each other, I talked to both of them individually and together and I witnessed both of them communicating their problems and resolving their issues. so their parents awarded them with some chicken nuggets that they also shared with me.
