I have worked at an early learning center in the Poudre School District for almost three years. Due to my experience coming from a big family I am very good at playing with multiple children on different levels of development at the same time.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I love going to the playground with kids in part because I am still a kid at heart. I love running after the children I work with at the park, weather that is catching them at the bottom of the slide, helping them walk up and down the stairs and play equipment, pushing them on the swing, holding them on the swing or chasing them around the park!
The most important part about being a nanny...
My top priority as a nanny is safety because if your child isn't safe then nothing else matters.
My experience with special needs children...
I don't have a lot of experience with special needs; I have worked with one kid through my job who is autistic. This kid was 4 and didn't like being touched at the end of the event, he came up to me and gave me a hug; I was so proud of him. Most of my family, myself included struggle with dyslexia so that is the only area I would say I have real experience dealing with.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I have many favorite moments but one that stands out to me is when a one-year-old kid that I spent a lot of time playing with one on one, started to use baby sign with me. This kid was not super talkative, but she was super active and smiley; we were sitting down coloring, and I was quizzing her on her colors by asking her to grab certain colors and she started crying for no apparent reason, her dad explained that she had had a rough day and didn't get her nap, that's when she started signing milk which I immediately recognized as I have taken a few ASL classes before. This was one of the first times I had gotten the opportunity to use sign language outside of the classroom and I was really glad that I was able to understand her and help her get what she needed to calm down.
