A little bit about me

I have 7 years of experience babysitting professionally and 10+ yrs. for friends/family. The best part about babysitting is finding fun ways to get kids interested in learning. The only discipline I use is a time out. I believe that if a child is acting out then there is something going on with them emotionally and I like to get to the root of that problem. Helping kids stay healthy mentally, emotionally and physically is my top priority along with doing it in a way that makes them feel safe and cared for. I like for us to have a fun and enjoyable time together so I do my best to always meet their needs. I like to learn about a kid’s likes and dislikes, interests, etc. If your child has an interest in it then I’ll learn everything I can about it. I love babysitting, and being paid to do what I love is just a bonus!

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I have a large group of family and friends and when we have get-togethers you can always find me hanging out with the kids. I'm always excited to see them and they me. I grew up around my siblings, cousins and various family friends. My mom always had another kid to watch along with my siblings and I and I loved helping her/playing with whoever came to visit. I hope someday to open my own daycare/child care facility but until then I like to keep myself occupied by working as much as possible and spending time with kids. And having the opportunity to spend time with kids as my job? Amazing! Dream come true!

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

the park, walks, bubbles, chalk, boardgames, cards, tv, movies, puzzles, toys, art, crafts, reading, computer games, video games, music, singing, cooking, and gardening. I have many varied interests and am a "jack of all trades". I love when a child has a new interest and I enjoy immersing myself in the topic and learning together. It's my belief that any activity can be educational. If I feel a child is struggling in an area I find a fun/creative way for them to develop their skills. Usually making it into a game that I tailor to their interests while also improving their understanding of a certain topic they are having difficulty with. One of my kids was struggling with his handwriting and would get very frustrated and give up on things easily. I introduced him to Super Mario 3 and he hated it at first. Now, he loves most games and is up for any challenge. His hand-eye coordination is top-notch and his teacher has noticed a big improvement in his handwriting and reading.

The most important part about being a nanny...

When I was a kid I remember how scary and confusing some things could be. First day of school, living with my mom and visiting my dad every week, having trouble in school with reading comprehension. I think the most important part of childcare is making sure each child feels safe and cared for. That each child feels like they can trust you and that they can talk to you. My mom always said that a child's first friend is their parent. That's always really stuck with me. Even though this is a job I'm being paid for, a young child doesn't really understand that. They think I'm just a friend that comes over to see them whenever. They don't understand that I only get to see them when I'm needed. It's important to me that the child knows I love coming to see them and that it's not just because I'm being paid to. That I genuinely like them no matter how they behave and that I'm sad when I don't get to see them for a while. I want them to know how much I care as their babysitter and friend.

My experience with special needs children...

I have experience with children and adults alike who are on the spectrum or have ADHD. I have no formal training but know how to easily communicate and meet the needs of a special needs child. I myself have ADHD and am open and honest about my struggles with it over the years. I strive to make sure children know they are wonderful the way they are and I teach them how to adapt things around them to a way that works best for their needs. I myself have had to do that since I was little and understand how frustrating and disheartening it can be at times. I make a point to share personal anecdotes about myself or anyone I know who has struggled in a way that is similar to their situation. I want them to know that everyone has something they struggle with and that even grown ups need help and guidance from others. I want them to not hesitate to ask for help when they need it but first try to solve the problem themselves using what they have learned.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I was sitting for one of my long time (7 years) clients and the little boy I watch, 6 yrs. old, asked me a question about the show we were watching. He's very inquisitive and is always asking me about this or that. So anyway, I went into an explanation and was talking about how the character was so silly for being angry (they were being dramatic) and I rolled my eyes. My kid looked over at me and said "I like that". And I said "You like what? What did I do?". He said "That thing you did with your eyes". 😂 I realized he meant me rolling my eyes so I did it for him again and he just giggled and giggled. He seems to have a difficult time understanding people's emotions and certain social interactions. But there are times like this when he surprises me and loves things like sarcasm and eye rolling. Kind of sassy little body language moments where it just clicks for him and he finds it hilarious. My favorite moments with the kids are joking around and having fun together.
