My experience with special needs children...
I once helped babysit a little boy with autism who loved routines and quiet activities. I learned that he felt calm when we stuck to his daily schedule, so I made sure we followed it carefully — snack time, reading time, and quiet play. He loved puzzles, so we’d work on those together, and I’d always cheer him on when he finished one.
Sometimes he didn’t want to talk, and that was okay — I just made sure he felt safe and knew I was there for him. Over time, he got really comfortable with me, and his mom said I was one of the few people he’d smile around. It meant so much to me to know I helped him feel happy and safe.

One time, I was babysitting a little kid who insisted that the only way to clean up toys was by making a race out of it. So we pretended the toys were race cars, and I became the official “referee” blowing a whistle every time a toy crossed the finish line into the toy box! Not only did the room get cleaned super fast, but we both had so much fun—and that kid still talks about our “toy car race cleanup”
