A little bit about me

My name is Caroline DiMarco, and I am twenty-three years old. I grew up in Bay Village, Ohio, and have spent the last few years in Kansas City while attending KU. I was a pre-nursing major, but have decided to no longer pursue the nursing field. However, I am still working towards a career in healthcare. I am interested in becoming a speech pathologist with a focus on pediatrics. I love drawing, writing, painting, and crafting. I am interested in studying science and language, and value life-long learning. I love to travel and explore! I am also passionate about staying healthy and active, and I commonly participate in swimming, dance, yoga, and hiking with my parent's dogs. I also enjoy cooking for my family and friends! I worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor for two summers for children ages two to twelve. I also have had a few wonderful volunteer opportunities over the years such as a summer art camp for children, an adapted soccer program, and tutoring at a local school.

My experience with special needs children...

During my junior year of high school, I had an amazing opportunity to volunteer for a special education soccer camp for six weeks. The program is part of the Achievement Center for Children, in Cleveland, OH, which offers adapted sports. For the duration of the camp, I was paired up with the sweetest nine-year-old girl named Peyton. She had cerebral palsy, and as a result, had limited mobility and was nonverbal. Peyton was always eager to get on the soccer field to practice! We spent most of our time together working individually on simple passing and scoring drills. Peyton was never discouraged, and her ability to kick and aim the soccer ball improved over the program, and we began to practice with more of the children and volunteers. All of the children were little balls of energy, and it was truly a blast to be around! It was a memorable six weeks that I will always look back on fondly, and the experience reiterated the importance of having patience and gratitude in life.
