I’m 25 & have an extended family full of kids. I’ve cared for children since I was old enough to help my mom with the neighbors & relatives (since age 10 or so). I babysat in high school for a mother of 3, two little boys & an older girl. I have 3 special needs cousins, ages 2, 7, & 9 that I care for daily. This entails of maintaining routines, creating good habits (eating, sleeping, cleaning, coping), learning to communicate positively with others, working/playing together to teach them in fun, interactive ways. I cook their meals when they’re over & make sure that they have everything they need, as well as making sure they feel heard & they understand the rules. Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I enjoy creating routines but also allowing the kids to voice their opinions on activities so that we can be sure that they are enjoying themselves as well. I enjoy working on the milestones that are essential to the child’s age whether it be learning the alphabet or learning how to make friends. Talking during downtime is my favorite to really get to know the child & their needs. Activities- cooking, cleaning, playing with toys, self care & health talks, watching educational programs, playing outside, swimming, singing, sports of any kind! I’m willing to try most anything within reason to make the kids & parents happy.

The most important part about being a nanny...

Being a nanny isn’t about any ONE thing; there are so many qualities that make a great nanny. If I had to pick just one that I felt was the most important to possess, I’d say it’s perspective. People & their lives are very complex. You can’t just assume to know their lives. Many people do just that when dealing with children, assuming they don’t have struggles of their own. I feel like it’s very important to respect the parents & kids. Having compassion & patience when talking with them are equally important as well. Once you understand their wants & needs, then you can better understand what your purpose as a nanny should be- what your goals are for that specific family. Communication is huge so talking about these things with the family would really help make it easier for everyone involved. It’s about being whatever you need to be for that family. You have to put them first.

My experience with special needs children...

My family consists of 5+ special needs members. Some of which are older than me, & some younger. I’ve spent years growing up with them & learning how to care for them. They’ve had children of their own now & I live next door to continue helping in any way that I can. I also just got a job working to take care of people with special needs bc I want to help make a difference in their lives & show them that they are equal, valued, & loved. I provide their transportation, cook their meals, help with hygiene routines, assist with cleaning, & manage their appointments & finances. I am sensitive & understanding to their needs.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I couldn’t pick just one. I’d have to say almost any given weekend when my cousins come down (I watch them/have them almost every weekend). Whether we’re making forts, playing a game, watching a movie, playing outside, or cleaning up the house, I always enjoy their company & the constant laughter that they provide. I just love being there for them when/if they need me. They come to me with their problems & concerns & I think my favorite moments are when they confide in me. That’s when we’re able to problem solve & that builds trust, knowing I’m there to help, no matter what. They’re a goofy bunch, so like I said, I can’t just pick one moment.
