Being compassionate, but firm. Children respond best to positive reinforcement, but that only works if you are consistent and clear on what the rules are.
My experience with special needs children...
Two children on the autism spectrum, ages two and ten. A child with generalized anxiety and suicidal tendencies, age eight. A child who was born at 23 weeks with visual impairment, developmental delays and special feeding requirements, age 6-18 months.
The most important part about being a nanny...
Once a four year old girl was convinced that the cottonwood fluffs that were spread all over the lawn were sleeping fairies. We tiptoed around making sure not to step on any!
