I was a live-in nanny for three children. When I started nannying, I was responsible for one two year old, with the other two children arriving during tne next 6 years.
I also taught middle school, with a specialty in reading and language arts for 22 years.

Keeping children safe, comfortable and being a friend enough to know when they are happy, upset or feeling ill and responding appropriately.

The most important part about being a nanny...
At first nanny job, the family home was out in a rural and beautiful area in Virginia. One day, when walking through the woods on a path to a friend's cabin one day with Griffin, a three year old girl, I was telling her how the Native Americans would sing when in the woods to alert animals to their presence. She then proceeded to sing "Jesus Loves Me" as loud as she could. All of a sudden, deer on both sides of the path starting running across the path in front of us and behind us. I grabbed her up and held her tight. I screamed a little. After a few seconds of quiet, I said shakily, "See, it works". From that day forward, we started singing loudly as soon as we opened the front door of the house, so that there would be no more startled wildlife. Looking back on that just reminds me of how cool an experience that was.
