My first job I had was as a swim instructor, getting experience to work with children ages 2-14, teaching them to be water safe and learning how different kids have different learning styles, so needing to adapt how I teach depending on the class.
My experience with special needs children...
As a swim instructor, I had a couple of kids who had autism that I worked with for a couple of years. The little girl I had was 5-6 years old and seeing her gradual improvement over the two years that I was her teacher was one of the most rewarding things I have ever experienced in my life. The boy I had was 14 years old and non-verbal and would listen so well to me, which the other instructors told me they were shocked by because they had seen how he could be when he had other instructors. Both of these kids were such a joy to work with.
