More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

A family that had their son, and the next 2 children in our Infant classroom found out that their oldest daughter had cancer (Age 6). So a few days a week, I took the youngest 3 (ages 8 mos, 2 and 4) to their home, prepared dinner, did bath time and got them ready for bed. This was while the parents were with their daughter, who was undergoing chemo and radiation treatment.
This continued over the course of 8 months, and she finally went into remission. She was the flower girl at my wedding, and her younger brother was the ring-bearer!

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

ALL based on developmentally appropriate variations:

* Reading books
* Playing music, singing, dancing
* Outside time, stroller walks, visiting the parks
* Collecting items, scavenger hunt
* Water play (such as a water table or sprinklers); kiddie pool
* Art! Painting, coloring
Possibilities are endless!

The most important part about being a nanny...

Working with parents and families to ensure that everyone is "on the same page" regarding their own ideas and goals.
Establishing and maintaining constant communication about basic needs, nutrition, sleep patterns, and overall development. This includes simple details about daily activities, a picture while on a stroll, and most importantly, information that can be used by parents and caregivers in order to make certain adjustments in schedules, amounts of food offered (plus timing)...
It is very much about developing a strategy that works for everyone, and remaining consistent with implementation.
Overall, it is most important for the nanny to be trustworthy, honest, approachable and to respect the family's philosophy on raising their child. With the infant/young child, it is of utmost importance to remain consistent, patient, nurturing and to develop and maintain that bond.

My experience with special needs children...

* Vision: 4 month old required glasses
* Hearing: 6 month old had hearing aids in both ears (removing, inserting, turning off and on)
* Physical: 10 month old appeared to have less strength in her legs, often struggling to move herself around; "loose" grip... was later diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy

The most important part about being a nanny...

I was a nanny for an adorable girl who was close to 2 yrs. Both parents worked at home, and they mostly stayed in their work area. I almost NEVER had to ask either of them to help with anything, but there was one day when I did "interrupt" the dad for a special reason...

Her parents had gotten her a potty to familiarize her with it, and I helped by giving her books to read and singing. I didn't make a big deal out of it, so she didn't feel intimidated or scared. On this particular day, I took her to the potty at the right time... and we had success!
I went to the dad's work space and simply whispered that he needed to see something. He saw the "result" in the potty and got so excited that he texted his wife (who was upstairs) and she came running down to see. Both of them stood in the doorway of the bathroom, cheering and celebrating... all due to a little poo. It was absolutely the cutest reaction I've ever seen from grown adults!
