More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I have worked in day care facilities for more then ten years. I have also spent the last five years working with Special Education students in a highs school life skills program. I have experience with all ages from 6 wks to 21 yrs old. Some of my friends have had challenges ranging from ADD, ADHD, Autism Spectrum disorder, Asperger's syndrome, brain injury, birth defects, Downs Syndrome, seizure disorders. I'm the kind of fun Good Cop Auntie every kid enjoys hanging out with. I do enforce rules, especially ones that involve safety, but I try to gently remind and redirect more often than I reprimand a child for behaviors. I foster a relationship where a child wants to follow my rules and to please me, they are not forced to. To maybe explain my style, here are two hard rules...
#1 If you use it as a weapon, I have to take it
#2 If it makes me laugh, you're not in trouble.
Again, I am about safety first, and then I'm about having a fun, educational and enjoyable day together.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I love finding ways of including math, science and language into everyday activities. The leaf we found, the rain rolling down the window, the apple slices on our plate, etc. I believe in the value of getting dirty. Mud, rain, puddles, dirt, sand, grass ..these are things kids love to experience in their own ways and they learn a ton from experiencing the world around them.
I also love having organized activities that allow kids to do things with their own hands, smell and taste and listen things and learn cool new things that make them feel capable of learning and doing even more.
I love art! Even when it's messy it lets a person express themselves and communicate thoughts.
I am able to only play a tambourine or maracas myself, but music is big in my life. Kids respond to music and want to make music no matter their age or ability and I love that so much.
Reading! I love books. Anytime someone says they hate reading, I find them the right book and prove they actually love reading.

The most important part about being a nanny...
It is most important to be able to establish an honest, open, caring relationship. To create space for expressing all feelings and thoughts and whims without judgement. The honesty and trust in that relationship has to be established so that have an honest view of how to best meet their actual needs and addressing their real goals.
My experience with special needs children...
I have more than a decade of experience working with kids of every age who happen to have some special needs. From mild learning, social or attention issues all the way to nonverbal, sight/hearing impairment and medical fragility, I have been blessed to be able to meet these friends where they were and to work daily to help them achieve their individual goals.
The most important part about being a nanny...
The moment that still gets my tears going is when one of my students who because of his challenges did not speak often learned to say my name and look me in the eye. This was after about two years of being friends. That reward, that honor, that punch in the feelings is a moment I will never, ever forget.
