To me the most important part of being a nanny is respect. All people deserve to be heard and understood. All people deserve to have things explained to them in a respectful manner. Every one deserves privacy and personal space. Caring for children should never dismiss any of these things.
My experience with special needs children...
I have cared for children with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, speech delays, heart conditions, cerebral palsy, short bowl disease, allergies, and severe food aversion. I am also very willing to learn about conditions I haven't encountered yet and would love to provide whatever your child may need.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I once cared for a child who had a really hard time trusting new people. The first few month I sat on the floor across the room reading books while the child hid under the bed. I will never forget the feeling when that child climbed out from under the bed with a new book for me to read. Through months of not pushing the kid but letting them know I was there I was able to gain their trust and make a connection with a sweet little child.
