More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

My experience with children spans several years and a variety of settings. I have served as a children's ministry teacher at First Baptist Church Flora for over five years, where I planned and led bi-weekly lessons for groups ranging from infants through pre-teens. I have also served as a CentriKid counselor for two summers, caring for children who were away from home, many for the first time. As a pre-teen retreat camp counselor, I led group discussions and provided emotional support for pre-teen girls over the course of two years. Outside of these formal roles, I have babysat privately on many occasions and have worked as a tutor for autistic children at the elementary school level through a professional tutoring company.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I genuinely love learning, and that love translates directly into the time I spend with children. I have loved reading since I was a small child myself, and I always make an effort to instill that love of books into the children for whom I am responsible. I also love taking children to parks and nature centers, where the entire environment becomes a classroom. My academic background is in biology and environmental science, so I find it natural and exciting to point out a bird, a plant, or an insect and turn it into a conversation. Science has always been my greatest passion, but what I love most is the act of learning itself, and children are some of the most natural learners there are. I enjoy asking them questions just as much as I enjoy answering theirs. I also love hands-on activities that engage their curiosity, whether that is a simple experiment, an outdoor scavenger hunt, or just exploring whatever they happen to be interested in that day.

My experience with special needs children...

I have worked directly with autistic children as a tutor at the elementary school level. In that role, I focused on meeting each child where they were. I understand that no two children learn the same way and that patience and consistency are the foundation of any meaningful relationship. I learned quickly that the most effective approach was to follow the child's lead. My broader experience in children's ministry and camp counseling has also exposed me to children with a wide range of emotional, social, and developmental needs.
