I grew up with a teacher as my mom, so I’ve always been around kids and helping to care for them. I also have siblings of my own and started babysitting when I was 16. Over the years, I’ve volunteered at many school events and gained experience supporting children in different settings. I also have experience caring for children with special needs.

I love doing arts and crafts with kids (and honestly, I enjoy it myself too!), playing games, and spending time outside. That said, I really like letting the kids take the lead on what activities they enjoy most and building from there.

I’ve had the privilege of caring for two girls with Down syndrome for about six months, as well as a young boy with autism for a few months. Those experiences taught me so much about patience, understanding, and the importance of meeting each child where they are.

The boy with autism I cared for was mostly nonverbal, though he spoke a little. Over time, he even tried pronouncing my name he called me “Jake” at first, but it turned into “JJ.” It became a funny little nickname that his family and I still smile about.
