I've been a reading buddy with school aged kids at WSSU's "MLK Day Read-in" twice. I accompany my buddy through the provided activities centered around the importance of history and reading, all the while uplifting their involvement in them (crafts, listening to speakers, picking out books, etc).
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I love to have dance parties, going to the park or on a walk, science experiments, and all forms of arts and crafts. If screentime is on the table and they're old enough, Avatar the Last Airbender is also a fun watch. I've noticed the busy bodies sit engaged in the cartoon and it's a personal favorite of mine too.
My experience with special needs children...
I babysat a boy from ages 5 to 6 who I would occasionally drop off at behavioral therapy for OCD and a few other mental health conditions. He had a lot of energy and could be irritated to the point of throwing things and biting. I never experienced more than a bit of attitude and brutal honesty from him, which he was entitled to as my car did need to see a vacuum. Overall, we seemed to have an understanding as I let him do his thing as long as he was safe and played along with him, occasionally bringing my own games, fidget toys, and craft supplies for the day.
