Hi! My name is Jamiya Mitchell, and I'm a recent graduate from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a degree in Biology (Pre-Med) and a minor in Psychology. Originally from New Orleans and now living in the Lafayette area, I’ve always had a deep love for children and caring for others.
Growing up in a big family, I was often the go-to babysitter and spent a lot of time around babies and young kids. Those early experiences sparked a lifelong passion for childcare, and I’ve continued to build on that with a strong academic background in child development and psychology.

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

Growing up in a large family, I was often asked to babysitting younger siblings, cousins, and family friends. From newborns to school-aged children, I gained hands-on experience with feeding, diaper changes, naptime routines, helping with homework, and keeping kids entertained with fun, age-appropriate activities.
During college, I also helped friends and family with occasional babysitting, especially during evenings and weekends. These experiences helped me become confident in managing multiple children, handling bedtime routines, and staying calm in unexpected situations.
While studying psychology and pre-med, I developed a strong understanding of child development, which has helped me connect with kids on a deeper level and support them emotionally as well as physically.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I love engaging children in creative, educational, and active play. Some of my favorite activities include arts and crafts, reading books together, playing pretend games, and exploring nature through walks or backyard adventures. I also enjoy helping with homework and creating fun learning games that match their age and interests.
For younger children, I enjoy singing songs, sensory play, and working on motor skills with building blocks or puzzles. Overall, I aim to make every activity fun, meaningful, and a chance for growth.

The most important part about being a nanny is creating a safe, loving, and supportive environment where children feel secure, valued, and free to be themselves. It’s not just about watching kids—it’s about building trust, forming a positive bond, and playing an important role in their growth and development.
A great nanny shows up with patience, consistency, and care every day. For me, it's also about being a dependable support system for the parents—someone they can count on to care for their children as if they were my own.

My experience with special needs children...

My experience with special needs children comes from helping care for my sister, who has a disability. Growing up alongside her has given me firsthand understanding of the patience, compassion, and flexibility required to support a child with unique needs.
I’ve helped with daily routines, emotional support, mobility assistance, and communicating in ways that suit her best. This experience has taught me how to be more empathetic, attentive, and responsive to the individual needs of each child.
Because of this personal connection, I’m very comfortable and confident working with children who may require extra care or support—whether that’s through creating a calm and structured environment, helping with tasks, or simply being someone they can trust.

The most important part about being a nanny...

One of my favorite nanny moments was when I helped a little boy I was watching learn how to write his name for the first time. We had been practicing together for a few weeks with fun activities like tracing in sand, using finger paint, and writing with sidewalk chalk. One day, completely on his own, he proudly showed me his name written on a piece of paper—and the smile on his face was unforgettable.
It was such a special reminder that even small moments can have a big impact. I love being part of those “firsts” and watching kids grow in confidence while having fun.
