A little bit about me

My name is Jasmine Garza and I am in the process of getting my teaching degree online. My heart was made for working with kids with special needs! My hope is to one day open a school for children diagnosed with Autism. In the meantime, I have been getting my education and as much experience working with kids. I’m very patient and have experience working with a diverse group of people. My husband and I do not have kids of our own, just a dog and two cats! We live in Iowa but are looking to move to the New York area. I am not CPR or First Aid certified at the moment, but am willing to be prior to employment! I have gotten the C-19 vaccine as well.

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I have worked in the school setting for 3 years as a teaching assistant. My specialty is special education. I have worked with multiple disabilities, including Autism, Down Syndrome, Battens Disease, ADD/ADHD, Defiance Disorder, etc. I have also worked in a daycare and a nursing home for adults with special needs.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

The BEST activities to do with children are crafts! I love to help kids get their hands dirty. Of course, with a good pick-up afterwards! One of my responsibilities as a teachers assistance was the STEM projects. I planned education crafts, such as making the solar system using balloons and paint. I enjoy playing games with kids that get them thinking and having fun. I’m not afraid to be silly!

My experience with special needs children...

I worked in an extended core classroom for children ages 5-11. All of my students had some form of intellectual or physical disabilities. The student I primarily worked with was nonverbal and had Autism. I helped her with educational activities and lessons as well as daily cares (bathroom, feeding, etc) as well as supervision. I documented on her progress too.

The most important part about being a nanny...

The student I primarily worked with was nonverbal and I will never forget the first time she communicated with me using a communication device by herself! It was something she refused to use previously. We began working with it using hand-over-hand help. One day, she had had a tantrum, resulting in her biting me in the face. I calmly told her, using my words as well as her communication device, that it hurt me when she bit me. By herself, she used her device to say, “I’m sorry.” It melted my heart completely!
