I’ve volunteered at two elementary schools (K-2), and a special needs school to further my understand of nonverbal communication for my brother. I’ve assisted in the Special Olympics for three years, and Night to Shine (special needs prom) one previous year.

I’m an outdoor gal, we can draw with chalk, blow bubbles, walk around the neighborhood, or even sit in the yard to eat lunch.

Being kind. Children’s brains are like sponges, they observe and soak it all in. It’s wonderful in a great environment, where there’s love, generosity, respect, and kindness. Teaching a child to be a human, there’s nothing quite like it. It’s extraordinary.
My experience with special needs children...
My brother (5) is nonverbal. We accommodate him by giving him options. That way he can point, or grab what he likes.
When I volunteered at Webb Street, I helped two autistic 8 year olds. They were wonderful. One of the students loved colors. So I’d sit with her and flip through her favorite book and tell her my favorite things associated with the color. The other student loved songs, so I learned a couple of kids songs to teach her. She loved that. Unfortunately when COVID hit Webb Street wasn’t accepting anymore volunteers.
