A little bit about me

I am a mom of 2 boys ages 14 and 20. I have been a student or science educator all my life. I was a professor at UNC-Chapel Hill in science education for 16 years and taught high school science for 8 years at Carolina Friends School and Chapel Hill High School. I have "retired" from teaching and am looking for part time work. I would to spend this next stage playing with and cherishing young humans. Given my experience in science education, I love discussions, explorations and experiments in all topics, but especially science. I feel fortunate to continue to have a childlike awe for most things. While I taught teenagers or young adults most of my career, I appreciate the awe and wonder younger children have. I am excited about the opportunity to work with this curious energy. I also understand, from personal experience, the challenge of working full time with young children. Thus, I will be able to empathize with the challenges and struggles families face and how to best support them.

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I was a high school science teacher for 8 years. I also have two children of my own, boys now age 14 and 20. As an educator, I won several awards due to the deep care and concern I dedicated to my students. I also take care of my nieces and nephews often. In my longer life, I have an appreciation for how different every child is and how they each have unique gifts. I taught at Carolina Friends School, a Quaker school, for 4 years and have sent both of my boys to Friends. The school focuses on the value of inner light and provides an incredibly compassionate and caring approach to teaching. I learned a great deal from these amazing educators. A quaker approach emphasizes the inner light that every human has and how education can support this inner light. It values the diversity of how children think and feel as well as how they are best cared for. The goal is to help the children explore and find their inner light, which includes their unique talents, passions and interests.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

Exploring outside and examining what we find (leaves, rocks, insects, etc.), playing games, designing little experiments, laughing and snuggling. I really love museums and would love to take children to the many local museums.

The most important part about being a nanny...

It is important to me that the child/children I work with alway feel seen, heard and safe with me. I am very warm and affectionate. I love the energy that young people have and they curiosity. I also love helping children see their own gifts by pointing out their strengths when they make great observations or have good/unique ideas.
It is also essential for me to have great communication with the family I am supporting. I am a flexible person who knows the challenges of being a working parent and will be eager to support my family in whatever way I can. I will regularly reach out for feedback from the parents to make sure I am serving them well. They know their children best and I will be partnering with them to support their child/children.

My experience with special needs children...

As a teacher for 8 years, I worked with students with a range of special needs. I am willing and eager to learn new strategies as well.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I have a ton of such instances with my children and my nieces and nephews. I think my favorite moments with kids is getting them excited about something and going out to explore. I am a child at heart and am easily excited by nature. I am the nanny that will collect bugs, leaves, etc while on a walk and explore them with a magnifying glass or arrange them by size and shape, whatever exploration is appropriate for a child's developmental level.
I also love to do arts and crafts with any kind of materials. Mostly, I enjoy laughing and exploring. This is why I have always worked with young humans my entire career. I love their energy and enthusiasm.

I'm a dedicated childcare provider with 15+ years of experience caring for children from newborns to teens. I'm also a proud mom to a 15-year-old daughter. I tailor my care to each child's personality and learning style and have experience with Montessori and Waldorf approaches. I hold a Lead Teacher Montessori Certificate for ages 3-6 and love integrating hands-on, child-led learning into everyday activities. I'm fluent in two languages and enjoy introducing children to bilingual learning in a natural, playful way. I'm a strong communicator-organized, transparent, and dependable. I love spending time outdoors, reading, crafting, cooking, swimming, and exploring with the children I care for.
