A little bit about me

I started babysitting when I was 13! I went to Roanoke College and received a bachelors degree in sociology and a concentration in healthcare delivery. I babysat my professors children and interned at a Montessori school.During the summers I nannied for three different families. Once I graduated I worked for Early Head Start, First as a family advocate teaching a program called parents as teachers as well as nurturing classes. I would activities with the children for the parents and connect them to any necessary resources. Next I worked as a child development teacher for early head star work with children 6 weeks - 3 years old. Now for the past eight years I have been working at Critchlow Adkins Childrens Centers as a managing teacher. I have taken several early childhood education classes and keep up with continuing education credentialing set forth by the state of Maryland and remain at the highest level 6. I love children, having fun, teachable moments, being creative and crafty,

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

1. When I graduated college I became a substitute for The Kindergarten.

2. Early Head Start 4 1/2 years. The first 2 1/2 years-Family advocate and As an advocate my job was to empower parents/families/high school mothers and connect them to necessary resources and services. During home visits I taught the Parents as Teachers Program. I spent 2 years in the infant and one’s classrooms. I conducted screenings and assessments (domains- social emotional, cognitive/problem solving/ fine and gross motor skills/ and communication/language on children 6 weeks - 5 year olds. Using their strengths to build upon areas of development that many children lacked the opportunity to develop. I worked aside the infant and toddler program encouraging the children and families for early intervention pertaining to developmental delays. Early head start taught me the value of the whole child.

3. Critchlow Adkins Children’s Centers-9 years as the managing teacher of the 2 year old classroom.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

Nature walks, getting creative with water table/sensory play ex: giving the baby dolls a bath or paint with cars and use the water table as the car wash. I love reading books with children- especially interactive books. Arts and crafts I could do all day with the children. I really enjoyed dramatic play- the kids put doctor dress-ups on and examined mostly the teachers. Dramatic play also often consisted of restaurants or dinner. I loved seeing their imaginations come to light. Each week my students and I choose a tastey Tuesday routine. We made homemade popsicles, smoothies ( they chose exactly which fruit/vegetable or yogurt flavor), we had many taste tests (potato chips, eating the rainbow, tasting all green foods). Then we would graph likes and dislikes on a poster board. On the board was a picture of each child and a picture of the food they tried, we placed happy face stickers on the foods we liked and sad face stickers on our dislikes. We would then count and total them aloud.

The most important part about being a nanny...

The most important aspect of being a nanny is establishing trust with the child as you “learn them”. By being consistent, responsive and nurturing. I know in the classroom once a child started to trust me, I was their go to teacher. Trust makes children feel safe and freely start to enjoy exploring and learning. Every once in a while they turn around for a look or word of encouragement and then continue on.

My experience with special needs children...

I have worked many wonderful children-classified as special needs. In the past 5 years several of my 2 year old students were diagnosed as on the spectrum. I think one of the first things a teacher needs to do is determine what kind of learner the child is (ex a musical learner, or Kinesthetic learners need physical activity and tactile experiences, or are they visual learners?) Once you have pin pointed a child’s learning style you add their interests and build from there. For example a child in my classroom wanted to do one thing only- play with cars, trucks, trains, school buses. So to engage him in activities I incorporated transportation ex. He finally sat down and looked at books of they consisted of transportation. He finally joined in our learning activities- making a paper plate bus, I watched him string 10 beads because they were different color trains. Before that he wouldn’t even try to string a bead. The transportation puzzle that made the corresponding sound to the piece
