More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I have worked as a Behavioral Technician for around 6 months in the past so I have experience with children who have autism, OCD, etc. I have worked with children who are also medically disabled in many ways. I have 6 years of experience volunteering for children ages 5-16 with varying levels of attention. I also have 10 siblings, 8 of which are younger and of those I have helped dress, shower, change diapers, clean up areas they occupy as well as keep them fed and well entertained throughout the day.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I love allowing children to express themselves in a way that helps them grow, whether that be catering to their special interests or cultivating new ones. When outdoors, activities like using swings, learning about the nature around them, playing small games that require physical activity help nurture that. As for indoors I tend to attempt to veer away from technology if able to, utilizing paper to do different crafts, learning shapes/numbers, and drawing animals and humans alike. Games like hide and seek, and tag are also great examples of allowing physical exercise while still maintaining boundaries and keeping safe. Clay, play doh, felt and other hands on crafts are great tools as well!

The most important part about being a nanny...

To me, a successful nanny means that the child feels supported, loved and heard. A community based around a child can be so crucial especially in their formative years, and there is value in having others around your child that is willing to go above and beyond to achieve that sense of comfort.

My experience with special needs children...

I have helped care for a child who was both autistic and nonverbal, who also had some feeding challenges and struggled with communication. My time with them allowed me to become more acquainted with a particular set of needs but also help the child grow more confident as well. I have siblings who are autistic and dedicate my time to helping them develop their own ability to communicate their needs and become comfortable in new environments. My time as a Behavioral Technician was one and one with the children, where I taught them how to express themselves in a healthy way that was safe and still allowed for freedom of expression. I also helped with teaching safety, feelings, and structure.

The most important part about being a nanny...

My favourite moment with a child was when a child I worked with who originally could not tolerate any textures began to play with me using play doh. Clay was a trigger for him when I first worked with him. When I was able to not only have it in his line of sight, but also have him pick it up, squeeze it and pass it to me, I knew then that we were doing amazing together. A support system is so important for children especially those with special needs and that moment was pivotal for us.
