A little bit about me

Hi, my name is Jordan King. By way of background, I am from Bloomfield Hills, which is about thirty miles north of Detroit. I am an only daughter of two retired journalists. I was raised to be tolerant, well-mannered and hard working. I attended a preparatory school called Cranbrook Kingswood that had an emphasis on fine art. I went on to attend the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in England, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Classical Acting. While pursuing my career as an actress, I primarily supported myself as a nanny or babysitter. The pandemic was a highly galvanizing time in terms of reflection and even though I think I will always be an artist, I no longer wish to pursue acting in the same way. My time working with families, especially during the pandemic, provided me with a profound feeling of being of great service. Taking care of kids and helping to support families as whole has given me great fulfillment and it is what I am now pursuing long term.

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

My most pertinent experience outside of nannying was as a drama camp counselor in my teens. I was young but I do think it’s relevant as it greatly increased my confidence in being able to handle multiple children as well as developing vigilance in terms of safety. The mandate was for about sixty kids to mount a summer theatre production. They were responsible for acting, costumes, makeup and set building. It was also lucky as I was able to gain more private work experience, as the campers’ parents appreciated that their children knew me, so I was often hired outside of the camp.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

At my two most recent positions, we made a lot of small movies. The kids would often want to show their parents what they could do on their bikes and I would film it. Or just being silly and doing an act around the living room. Good fun and the kids were happy to be able to send something to their parents. Otherwise, always art and building. I have most enjoyed my time with kids when being creative and they are often the most creative, so I follow their lead.

The most important part about being a nanny...

The most important part is absolutely safety. The physical well being of a young person is my primary responsibility. I am most proud of being trusted in this way. And I think from there, emotional safety and then intellectual safety. Kids should feel safe physically and know that the person who is in charge cares for their well being in a primal sense. I think kids can feel that. And from there, it’s great if kids can come to feel safe letting their nanny know how they may feel or what they may need to ‘feel’ better. And then (which I think can follow) is when kids can start to explore and share their interests. Overall: kids being able to develop trust in someone who is not their parent—and I believe this starts with feeling safe.

My experience with special needs children...

I have cared for special needs infants for a short time. I was responsible for twin boys who were born prematurely. I worked with their nurse on increasing their field of movement. I was trained to be able to look out for certain milestones/progress. The twins were six months old at the time.
