My experience with special needs children...
I have worked with an 8 year old boy with autism. He often needed time to sit by himself and think, and to be left completely alone. Once I knew how and when he was having these moments, I brought him to a place where he could be alone. He preferred to sit in a dark room, with the door shut, and I would let him. I would sit outside of the room, checking in with him a few times. Once he was ready to play, he would come out on his own, and we would get right back to playing like we were before.
The most important part about being a nanny...
One family I worked for had 3 kids and a German Shepard. The kids loved to play outside with the dog, and we would play tag with her every time I watched them. It was very fun to see their faces when they were playing and how happy they were.
