More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
My first job at 16 was as a birthday party hostess at Chuck E. Cheese's. I have also worked at various summer camps and after school programs. Lastly, I have been babysitting and nannying on and off for years. Most recently, I nannied for a family for 1.5 years, from January 2018 to June 2019. I then worked at a summer camp from June-August 2019 and taught film editing to kids in the summer of 2020.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I love when kids use their imaginations. Playing pretend is one of my favorite activities to do with young children. Their imaginations have no bounds and it's just wonderful to see. I also love running around outside and getting out some energy, doing puzzles, or curling up on the couch and watching movies.
The most important part about being a nanny...
The most important part of being a nanny is building a relationship with the kids. I have worked with kids of all ages, and I make it a point to really get to know each child. I keep in touch with quite a few of my former kids, and our continued relationship is a testament to the bond we built when I was working with their families. When I'm nannying, it's almost always because the parents can't be home (or if they are home, they are working and unable to be with the kids). It's important that the kids learn to trust you, because sometimes they'll be spending more time with you than with their own parents. I take pride in the relationships I've built with my kids and I have lifelong relationships with some of the families.
My experience with special needs children...
I have moderate experience with special needs children. In the summer of 2015, I worked at a summer camp that had a large population of special needs campers. Many campers were on the autism spectrum, and many others had oppositional defiant disorder. I have also taken a few classes in my masters program focused on students with special needs.
The most important part about being a nanny...
My favorite nanny moment was playing a "detective" game outside with a 6 year old I was nannying. We had been playing with legos for a while and she was starting to get bored. I could sense her building boredom so I came up with the idea of us pretending to be detectives and going outside to look for clues. I wanted to get her outside and using her imagination. She was SO excited about the game. We got all dressed up in fancy detective coats and sunglasses and went up and down her street looking for any clues to help up solve the mystery (which I had made up in the moment). There were multiple times during the game that she stopped to tell me, "This is so fun!" She was such a creative kid which came out with her lego building, but it was so nice to get to see her imagination and creativity come out in a different way. She talked about that game for weeks after.
