I have been a nanny, a preschool teacher assistant, and a behavior support professional in elementary, middle, and high school. I am experienced working with children who have Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Intermittent Explosive Disorder, Emotional Disturbance diagnosis, ADHD, among other special needs. I am also a certified reading and ESL tutor.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I enjoy doing a large variety of activities with children. Some of those activities include: Art, Dance, Singing/Nursery Rhymes, Reading, Teaching/Tutoring/Homework, Going on walks, Playgrounds, Library visits, Volunteering, Swimming, Video games and board games, among others! I'm a big believer in that children learn through play, and even more so when an adult joins in the playtime.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I read something recently on social media that touched my heart. The caption read, "Love is the real curriculum." Working for years in public schools, I have seen multiple curriculums come and go, but love is the constant. So, as a nanny, I think loving children is the most important part, because love encompasses so much. Love includes respect, patience, kindness, and consistency.
My experience with special needs children...
My 13-year-old son has cerebral palsy and ADHD. My 10-year-old daughter has had generalized anxiety since she was a preschooler, and she also has fibromyalgia. I have worked tirelessly on behalf of my children, advocating for their needs, working with specialists, and finding opportunities to foster their growth and resilience. I apply that same energy towards my special needs students and clients.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I was a nanny for an adorable toddler. A sweet memory I have of her is every time I would pick her up from daycare. She couldn't say "Kelly" very well, so she would excitedly yell, "Cubby!" and then run into my arms.
