A little bit about me

Hi, I’m Kirah! Thank you for taking a minute to look over my profile. You’ll find more information about my childcare experience below, but first let me introduce myself.

I’m 26 years old. I’m originally from Ohio, but moved to Porterville in 2022 with my partner to be closer to his family. I’ve been working as a nanny since then. I recently started looking for work elsewhere as the family no longer needs childcare services.

Some of my hobbies include hiking, traveling, reading, writing, d.i.y. projects, and baking. I’m also a pet owner and love animals. I have experience caring for cats, dogs, hamsters, rabbits, lizards, birds, and horses. If you have pets, I would be happy to help out with pet care.

In addition to childcare, I have also worked as a cashier, food service worker, writer, farm hand, and library circulation clerk. I am currently taking online college courses with plans to complete my degree by next spring.

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I’ve always enjoyed working with children. I grew up with two younger siblings and I started babysitting for family friends around the age of 12. I continued to babysit throughout high school and I nannied for one family with two children during the summer after high school graduation.

During college, I volunteered with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America as an after-school volunteer working with elementary students. I later worked part-time as a preschool center substitute. I moved to Porterville in 2022 and nannied for one family with a 2 year old. I continued to nanny for them until May 2024 when they no longer needed childcare services and they enrolled the child in full-time school.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I enjoy doing hands-on activities with children such as arts and crafts, sensory play, baking, games, puzzles, etc. I also like engaging them in imaginative play. I encourage them to practice age-appropriate skills such as color, number, and letter recognition, phonics, writing, reading, math, and problem solving skills. I also like to take children on fun outings to parks, libraries, museums, zoos, etc.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I love being a nanny because there is never a dull moment. Children are so imaginative and playful. They always have questions and ideas and a desire to learn new things. They always brighten my day with their smiles and laughter. I find their curiosity, enthusiasm, and ambition inspiring. Children remind me to find joy in the little moments and they make me hopeful for the future. They also remind me of the importance of slowing down and appreciating each day. They teach me how to be patient, understanding, and compassionate. They open my mind to new and interesting ideas and perspectives. It is so fulfilling to see children putting what they’ve learned into practice and embracing their natural talents. I love helping them on their journey to becoming their own person.

My experience with special needs children...

I have limited experience working with special needs children. However, I have previously nannied for a child on the autism spectrum. At the time he was about 7 years old. I was his nanny for one summer. I also cared for his sister who was a couple years younger but she was not a special needs child. I had also previously babysat for this family for a few years before becoming their nanny.

I treated him just as I would any other child and encouraged him to play alongside his sister. He usually liked to play independently which I understood and I made sure to give him time and space to do so.

He was sensitive, emotional, and impulsive. l did my best to help him regulate and work through his emotions in healthy and safe ways. Usually, he just needed space to calm down. He was very sweet, affectionate, smart, and silly. He simply needed a little extra patience and time, very clear instructions, and positive reinforcement.

The most important part about being a nanny...

One of my favorite memories as a nanny was celebrating the 4th birthday of the little boy I cared for. His family invited me to stay for pizza and cake that day. We sang happy birthday and had a dinosaur dance party. The joy and excitement he felt was contagious. It’s such a sweet memory!

Another favorite memory I have as a nanny was putting together a puppet show. The two children I cared for decorated paper bag puppets with paint, markers, stickers, yarn, google eyes, and more. We set up a stage with curtains and made up some silly stories for the puppets to act out. They had a blast and were excited to show their parents later.

I also really enjoyed having a tea party with the same two children. I brought a real tea set with me and we set up a table on the patio with tea, cookies, and sandwiches. The little girl brought out dolls and stuffed animals to be our guests. We played princess music and dressed up. It reminded me of when I was a little girl and I cherish the memory.
