I worked with the City Of Surrey in high school where I planted trees with children and we did some identifying activities.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...
Age appropriate activities! I have worked with children as young as 4 up to 13. Obviously they can't all do the same crafts or activities so I make sure to cater it to the right age group. Rainbow walks being my favorite for young children.
That entails having the little ones draw out some colors, usually a rainbow assortment, and we go on a walk and find things in nature that color match.

Connection. If the feeling isn't right for both parent and child then I feel like the nannying would be a bit awkward for all parties.

I've worked with non-verbal children but that is about my extent.

My last day working with a family of 3 I bought some washable paint, and we painted the entirety of my car. Most of it was their names, or their favorite things. I drove it like that till the next time it rained.
