I was a teachers assistant in an elementary school during my senior year of high school and a teachers assistant in a sixth grade classroom during my first semester in college.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I love reading to kids. I've found if you make reading specified to their interests (whether that means acting out a large spectacle of the characters or letting it be a relaxing activity with softspoken reading) kids are more willing to read and be read to. I'm also a big movie and show buff and love finding media thats both enjoyable for kids but educational as well.
The most important part about being a nanny...
Making sure the kids trust me and enjoy my presence. Afterall, I'm a stranger coming into their home who's now going to be telling them what to do so it's important to make sure they feel safe, listened to, and taken seriously. I love hearing kids tell me about their interests and creating a meaningful bond with them, especially if I'm to be watching them.
My experience with special needs children...
I've cared mostly for kids with autism and learning disabilities. I understand every kid has their own set of needs and accommodations.
The most important part about being a nanny...
One of my favorite moments is when me and a science class had done an experiment on erosion using a pan of water and skittles. At the end we had gone over different rocks and watched how water had changed them over time. A couple of the students had pointed out that the part of the skittle that had been flush to the bottom of the pan hadn't lost any of its color so after having a little discussion and showing them picture of rocks that had been eroded on the sides but not at the bottom, the look of all the puzzle pieces connecting in their heads was one of the most rewarding feelings to me.
